Diet Soda and Diabetes LinkDrinking as few as 2 cans of soda, especially diet soda, can double the risk of getting diabetes reports research by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.

The study involved 2,800 adults and found that those who consumed at least two 200ml servings of soft drinks daily were 2.4 times as likely to suffer from a form of type 2 diabetes. Most soda containers contain 12 oz, which is 355ml, so just one can could increase the risk by 1.5 times.

And drinking a liter of soda, increases your risk by 10 times.

The study was published in the European Journal of Endocrinology and found that there was no difference between artificially sweetened or just sugar.

The study was retrospective, participants were asked to recall and report their diet habits. The lead author, Josefin Edwall Löfvenborg, mentioned that the soda may influence glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity, that leads to the increased risk of latent auto-immune diabetes, a form of type 2 diabetes.

The study also noted that those that drink soda normally have a less healthy lifestyle overall, and the study aimed to adjust for it.

“In this study we were surprised by the increased risk in developing autoimmune diabetes by drinking soft drinks,” Löfvenborg said. We next plan on investigating what could counter this risk.”

Other studies recently have also found that consuming soda lead to other conditions, including increased risk of heart attacks, prostate cancer, strokes, and lower fertility rates.

Based on all these studies and from personal experience, reducing or eliminating all soda from your diet could enhance your health significantly, reduce your chances of having diabetes and overall improve your life.
